About This Design
A Guaraní face takes up the center of the front — circular eyes, geometric scrollwork, the visual language of an indigenous tradition that predates the country's name. The Paraguayan harp sits to its right, white ink. The flag-filled map anchors the upper right corner. On the back, a Ñandutí lace medallion sits above the number — the spider-web lace that women in Itauguá have been making since the 18th century. Below the "1," a bowl of sopa paraguaya steams. Inside the zero: the Río Paraguay from above, the river that splits the country and gives it its name.
