About This Design
A pre-Columbian jade mask sits center front — open mouth, circular eyes, the visual language of Costa Rica's Pacific and Nicoya indigenous traditions, white ink on black. Beside the #10, a stone rosette medallion: the geometric precision of pre-Columbian craft that predates the Spanish arrival by centuries. To the left of the country name, a kinkajou — the small nocturnal mammal of the cloud forest canopy, round-eyed and rarely seen in daylight. On the back, Arenal volcano rises above the number with a plume of cloud or steam, the active stratovolcano in Alajuela province. Inside the zero: a three-toed sloth hanging from a branch, the animal that Costa Rica's rainforest canopy made famous.
