About this product

"I am not a singer. I am a woman who sings."

Born in Costa Rica but Mexican by choice, Chavela Vargas was the "Chamana" (Shaman) who stripped ranchera music of its trumpets and fancy suits. Armed with only a guitar and her signature red poncho, she sang with a raw, tequila-soaked sadness that transcended language.

A lesbian icon decades before it was safe, she drank with Frida Kahlo, smoked cigars, and sang love songs to women without changing the pronouns. After surviving "15 years of hell" in alcoholism, she staged a legendary comeback in her 70s, becoming a muse to Pedro Almodóvar and filling Carnegie Hall at age 83. She lived and died on her own terms: free, brave, and owing nothing to anyone.

Wear the Legacy. Support the Community. 🏳️🌈

Chavela Vargas broke every rule to live authentically as a proud queer woman in mid-century Mexico, paving the way for generations to come. To honor her fierce spirit, $1 from every shirt sold is donated to Refugio Casa Frida—a sanctuary in Mexico City providing safety, shelter, and medical care to vulnerable LGBTQ+ youth. Just like Chavela, your purchase helps young people live freely, bravely, and on their own terms.
